Translation of documents for the child’s departure abroad

A child’s trip abroad with or without parents always raises many questions, especially when it comes to a child going abroad with only one of the parents or with third parties for a competition, excursion or camp, or completely alone. The most important thing is to carefully prepare the documents, understand the rules for leaving Ukraine and entering the target country. When do you need a translation of documents for a child to travel abroad?

According to the Ukrainian legislation, a child under the age of 16 has the right to leave the country (for example, when going to a summer camp or to participate in sports competitions, or when going on vacation with relatives who are not the child’s parents or guardians) only with the parents’ consent. Depending on the country to which the child is traveling, a translation of the child’s exit permit will also be required. The passport control employee has the full right to demand consent and its translation. Let’s consider the requirements for the countries that Ukrainians visit most often.

Translation of the consent for the child’s departure to the countries of the Schengen Area

In theory, most countries of the Schengen Area do not require a translation of the parents’ consent. And this is how it looks in practice:

• Germany requests a German translation in 100% of cases.
• Denmark, Iceland, Malta – a translation of the consent for the child’s departure into English is required.
• France – a choice between English or French.
• Austria accepts a translation in German or English, notarization is optional.
• Switzerland, Liechtenstein – a notarized translation into one of the following languages ​​is strictly necessary: ​​English, German, French, Italian.
• Latvian border guards are very often interested in a translation of the consent and prefer to see their native language in the document.
• Portugal – it is desirable to have an English or Portuguese translation.
• Slovakia – it is better to translate the consent into Czech, Slovak or English.

In Hungary, Greece, Spain, Italy, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Finland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, they most likely will not require the translation of documents for the child’s departure abroad. But if questions arise, you will have to wait until the migration service finds an interpreter, contacts the consulate and proves the legality of the child’s entry.
