Nostrification, or recognition of foreign degrees

Every country has its own educational system that differs from those of other countries. If you study abroad and want to proceed with your education in Ukraine, it can turn out that Ukrainian legal system will have troubles with the confirmation of the degree you received in a foreign institution. This also concerns the issue of whether you can practice certain professions, e. g. teaching. Thus, there are two ways of recognizing foreign degrees: on the basis of equivalence or on the basis of nostrification. Nostrification (Lviv) can come in handy in the opposite situation as well. For instance, if you are a doctor in Ukraine and wish to provide your services abroad.

1. You received education abroad and want to obtain a public position in Ukraine. Since foreign diplomas do not correspond to certification in our country, you will need nostrification. 
2. You studied in a foreign educational institution but decided to proceed with your education in a Ukrainian state-owned educational institution. 

Nostrification is required only if it comes to a job in state establishments (doctors, teachers etc.) and education in state-owned higher educational institutions. For private organizations or educational institutions, legalization of a diploma will be enough. 

What is nostrification?

Nostrification is a procedure aimed at the recognition of a foreign degree. During this procedure, training programs are compared. Additionally, academic achievements and professional qualifications are taken into account, as well as the form of studying (full-time or part-time) and the duration of a course in the program. All of the abovementioned guiding principles have to be performed on a certain level determined by the institution so that the degree can be recognized.

How much time is needed for the recognition of a foreign degree?

Usually, the procedure takes up approximately three months. What result might you receive? Full or partial recognition of your documents. If the document has been recognized partially, you will need to pass academic difference. 

Attention! Applications to state authorities are submitted in the Ukrainian language. This may be a problem for foreign citizens. 

Moreover, if a foreign diploma has been recognized, a university may demand sworn translation.
