Apostille is a 10x10 cm stamp that contains a text which corresponds to the established form. Stamps of apostille and legalization are filled in in Ukrainian. Apostille certifies a seal or signature on a document. What is the legalization of documents and an apostille, why is it necessary?
Types of legalization
Legalization means making a document legal to be used abroad.
Legalization of documents in Ukraine is a special procedure that is conducted in ministries and consulates and is necessary for confirming the validity of documents issued in Ukraine.
Depending on the country where you are going to use the document, the legalization procedure may involve consular legalization or apostille. Sometimes notarization of translation will be enough.
Apostille as well as legalization confirms only the signature of the person who certified the document.
How to choose a type of legalization?
A type of legalization you require depends on the country where you are going to submit your documents.
If this country signed the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, you do not need consular legalization, instead you need to have apostille placed, which we can assist you with.

Do I need apostille?
Apostille is needed only if this document will be used abroad.
Apostille is placed for using the document in the countries that signed the Hague Convention. If a country is not on the list of member states of the Hague Convention, the process of consular legalization is performed.
Legalization and apostille are not required if the international agreement provides for the abolishment or simplification of these procedures. The agreement states that documents issued or certified by an official institution according to the established form under an official seal on the territory of one of the parties do not require legalization on the territory of the other party. Only notarized translation of such documents is required.
Subtleties of legalization of documents
Legalization stamp and apostille are placed on the following documents:
- Documents issued by the judicial authorities of Ukraine;
- Documents issued by the authorities of the prosecutor's office and justice of Ukraine;
- Administrative documents (certificates of marriage, birth, divorce, death, name change);
- Educational documents and documents which confirm a scientific degree (diplomas, certificates, excerpts with grades, Candidate of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences diplomas, extracts from the university archives, training programs etc.);
- Documents compiled or drawn up by public or private notaries.
Legalization stamp and apostille cannot be placed on the following documents:
- Documents issued by an embassy or a consulate of Ukraine abroad;
- Administrative documents of a commercial type, documents for customs;
- Originals, copies or photocopies of a passport, military card, employment book, gun license, driver`s license, vehicle license, any ID document, normative legal acts, correspondence documents;
- Documents used by the authorities of the former soviet republics that were part of the USSR. Apostille can be placed only on the duplicates of these documents, which we can organize for you.
Where can I have apostille placed in Lviv?

Subtleties of notarization of translation
Notarized translation can be done on condition that:

The document contains a seal or a signature of a person or company issuing the document;

The correct date of the issuance is indicated;

The pages of the document are duly bound;

The pages contain no alterations or mechanical damage;

The originals of foreign documents contain an apostille stamp or consular legalization.
If these conditions are not fulfilled, a notary can refuse to notarize the document or its translation. In these cases, translation agency places its seal.
Concerning notarial certification of a translator`s signature For this service, you are required to provide an original or its proper notarized copy. Notarized translation is bound to the original document or, in case you will still need the original, to the copy of this document. A notary certifies the true signature of a translator, i.e. the faithfulness of translation. Terms: 1-2 working days. A notary makes a copy of the original document and binds it to the translation.
